Heat and temperature coefficients, apparatus for determining.-The rate of emission of heat by a fluid passing through a heat-interchange apparatus, such as a domestic radiator, is determined by apparatus providing an indication proportional to the square of the velocity of flow, v, of the fluid, or to other quantities varying as v<2>, such as (t1 - t2)<2>, t1 and t2 being the inflow and outflow temperature of the fluid, or (t1 - tr) (t2 - tr), tr being the temperature of the room &c. in which the heat-interchange apparatus is situated. Fig-. 1 shows a form of apparatus for measuring v<2>. The conduit 7 through which the fluid passes is provided with a baffle 6 and with a bye-pass 3, 5 to a meter 1 containing a measuring-wheel 4. The flow of fluid through the meter 1 is controlled by a valve 8 the opening of which depends on the pressure due to the flow in the conduit 7, so that the speed of flow through the meter is proportional to the square of the speed in the, conduit 7. Fig. 6 shows a form of instrument for measuring (t1 - tr) (t2 - tr). One coil of a watt-meter W is in the circuit of a thermo-element of which the hot junction V is in the inflow conduit for the fluid and the cold junction R is in the room to be heated, while the other coil of the watt-meter is in the circuit of a thermo-element of which the hot junction A is in the outflow conduit and the cold junction R is in the room. Fig. 8 shows a double Wheatstone bridge for measuring (t1 - t2)<2>. One bridge comprises fixed resistances e, f and resistance thermometers c, d in the inflow and outflow fluid conduits. The current between the points g, h, which depends on t1 - t2 is supplied to the second bridge comprising fixed resistances k, l and resistance thermometers m, n at the same temperatures as the thermometers c, d respectively. The current passing through the measuring instrument J depends on (t1-t2)<2>.
