Abstract

299,090. Kent, Ltd., G., and Clifford, S. July 21, 1927. Heat and temperature coefficients, apparatus for determining .-Apparatus for measuring the quantity of heat in a fluid flow system, e.g. a hot water central heating system comprises a venturi tube &c. inserted in the fluid flow and controlling a variable resistance, a, device responsive to the temperature of the fluid controlling another variable resistance and an electrical device for continuously indicating &c. a product which is a function of the product of the two variable resistances. For measuring the total heat of the fluid a single thermometric device is employed, and for measuring the heat consumption between two points two thermometric devices are employed, one at each of these points, the indicating &c. means being operated in accordance with the difference between the resistances controlled by the thermometric devices. The venturi &c. tube 1 actuates a contact arm 2, Fig. 2, moving over a resistance 3 connected as a potentiometer across a suitable source of power. The thermometric device T comprises a bulb 4, Fig. 4, containing expansible fluid and communicating with a Bourdon tube 5 actuating a contact arm 6 moving over a resistance 7. The variable voltage outputs of the two resistances are transmitted to the coils of an integrator I which is a two-coil instrument similar to a watt-hour meter. The. movement of the integrator is thus a function of the product of the two variable resistances. When heat consumption is to be measured, thermometers subjected to the inflow and outflow temperatures control two variable resistances which are differentially connected to one coil of the integrator. The integrator &c. may be situated at any desired distance from the flow and temperature operated devices.
