Abstract

391,133. Measuring heat quantities. SATCHWELL, L., Farnham Road, Slough, Buckinghamshire. Oct. 15, 1931, No. 28722. [Class 97 (iii).] In measuring the heat lost or gained by a liquid in passing round a circuit the return flow is delivered into one or both of two outlet paths by a proportioning valve comprising a tube provided with suitably spaced ports and controlled by a member responsive to thermal conditions in the return flow and, if desired, the supply flow. In the form shown, a sealed expansible vessel 3 filled with turpentine or toluene is fixed at 4 within a chamber 1 interposed in the supply main and carries by an adjustment screw 19 at its upper free end a frame 5 from which is suspended by a connecting-rod 24 passing through a stuffing box 20 an expansible vessel 6 within a chamber 2 interposed in the return main. The free end of the vessel 6 thus moves in accordance with the difference in temperature in the supply and return mains and carries a valve comprising a tube 11 into which the liquid enters through apertures 12 and passes out through an aperture 13 communicating with a pipe provided with a volume meter 17 and an aperture 14 communicating with a byepass pipe 18 in proportions depending on the position of the valve 11. The meter 17 thus gives a reading proportional to the heat lost.
