Abstract

476,860. Calorimeters: KINGS PATENT AGENCY, Ltd. (Reineke, J. H.) Aug. 27, 1937, No. 23510. [Class 97 (iii)] In a liquid-flow calorimeter for measuring the calorific value of gaseous or liquid fuel, a flow of liquid, e.g. water, is divided into two parts at a constant ratio, one part being directed into a fuel container to displace fuel therefrom. to a burner and the other part being passed through the calorimeter to absorb the heat from the burner. The apparatus shown comprises a vessel a and a series of fuel containers b which are connected to the burner f through a pipe e. A flow of water from the float regulator i and cock t passes to the tube k and pipe c, from which part passes into the containers b and drives the fuel to the burner f and the remainder passes through pipe c<1> to the calorimeter d and then through the pipe c<2> to the vessel a. Since the water maintains the same level in the vessel a, containers b and tube k, the ratio of the volume of water passing through the calorimeter d to the volume of fuel supplied to the burner is maintained constant and this ratio may be varied as desired by closing one or more of the cocks s at the entrances to the containers b. The calorific value is determined from the difference in temperature of the cooling water at the inlet to and outlet from the calorimeter. A measuring cycle is completed when the water level reaches the top of the vessel a. A siphon m then empties the system, the water from the pipe c being byepassed to the siphon through the mercury valve o, and the water in the containers b being replaced by fresh fuel entering through the diaphragm non-return valve g.
