[Class 97 (iii).] To measure the quantity of heat in a current of fluid, heat sensitive means in the path of the fluid is arranged to control automatically the flow bye-passed to a meter so that the ratio of the volume passing through the meter to the total volume is directly proportional to the temperature of the fluid. A thermostat in the fluid conduit may vary the position of a valve distributing the fluid between a bye-pass in which the meter is mounted and a conduit having means offering a frictional resistance equal to that of the meter in the bye-pass. In the form shown, the fluid stream is divided between a bye-pass E containing a meter C and the conduit A by a valve P comprising an axially movable disc. The latter is moved by differential thermostat mechanism comprising a thermostat T in the supply conduit S and a thermostat T1 in the return conduit Z. Pressure sensitive means may be arranged to control the distributing valve in addition to the temperature sensitive means.
