Abstract

503,164. Calorimeters. JUNKERS KALORIMETERBAU GES. June 1, 1938, No. 16358. Convention date, June 25, 1937. [Class 97 (iii)] Automatically adjusted nozzles modify the supply of fuel and cooling medium to a calorimeter so that the calorific value of the fuel indicated corresponds to a normal state. As shown cooling water from the storage tank 1, having a recooling member 34, is passed by a conveyer belt 3 to a tank 57 with an overflow 58. From the tank 57 the water flows through pipe 54, inlet thermometer 44, calorimeter, and outlet thermometer 45 to a discharge box 46 and by way of a two-way diverting member 43 either to a pipe 41 and a measuring vessel for checking purposes or to a pipe 36, safety device 14, and the tank 1. The amount of water passing to the calorimeter is modified by providing a bye-pass 32 leading to a nozzle 28, which is automatically adjusted by a needle 30 on an arm 33 pivoted at 33a and connected by a link 13 to a resilient diaphragm 12. The latter responds to changes in volume of a body of gas 11 which is surrounded by, and subject to the temperature of, the fuel. The fuel is led to the burner 37 through a pressure regulator 5, a moistening apparatus 7, the chamber 27 containing the temperature responsive device 11, 12, and the density regulator 24, comprising a needle valve 23 controlled by a spring loaded diaphragm. A gas meter 6 or flow meter 35 may be included for checking purposes. Air for combustion is saturated in the shaft 10 before passing through the pipe 4 to the burner 37. The weighted lever 21 of a fuel valve 22 is held in the open position by the stem 15 of a float in the safety device 14. A spring urged pin 17 is held in the retracted position by the diaphragm 19 when gas in a chamber 38 is heated by the flame. Insufficiency of fuel causes the diaphragm to release the pin 17 which moves to push a resilient catch 16 on the lever 21 clear of the stem 15 so that the lever 21 falls and the valve 22 closes. The thermometers 44, 45, comprise resilient bellows surrounded by a sealed body of gas and connected respectively to the main wheels of a differential gear, of which the planet wheel frame carries the pointer 50 moving over the scale 53. The pointer 50 may also carry a recording pen 51 and a contact moving over a potentiometer 49.
