Abstract

415,378. Fluid actuated valves; fountains. WILLIAMSON, F. E., (trading as WILLIAMSON & CO.), 13, Coupar Street, Dundee. Jan. 21, 1933, No. 1996. [Classes 69 (i) and 135.] In a valve which is opened by depression of its spindle G against the action of the fluid pressure on the valve member H, the closing of the valve is retarded by a diaphragm N connected to the valve H and forming a wall of an actuating chamber to which a portion of the controlled fluid is admitted when the valve is opened and from which the said fluid escapes past a leakage device P or Q into the valve outlet before the valve can close. Fluid is admitted to the actuating chamber by means of a spool 0, the upper flange of which has holes O<1> so that on depressing the head A which has a pin C working in a helical groove D, the rod B, the spool 0 and the valve spindle G are all depressed and fluid passes between the spool flanges through the holes O<1> into the actuating chamber. On releasing the head A, the bottom flange of the spool contacts the diaphragm and the trapped fluid can only escape through a cut P in the diaphragm seat or past a set-screw Q in the spool. In another form, the fluid assists in opening the valve and is admitted to the actuating chamber through the main valve spindle which in this case is hollow and controlled by a pilot valve located at its base. The pilot valve spindle is operated by a push button and carries a cross-pin which depresses the main valve spindle if the fluid pressure on the diaphragm has not already done this. The spool is dispensed with, and the set-screw is provided laterally in the main valve spindle which is clamped to the diaphragm. Both forms of leakage device may be used. The valve may be used in self-closing taps, or to control drinking fountains, or with ball and float gear as a cistern supply valve. Various forms of pilot valve are described in the Provisional Specification and reference is made therein to the use of a piston and to a form in which fluid escapes from the actuating chamber on operation of the pilot valve and gradually leaks into the chamber to close the valve.
