Abstract

426,964. Slow-closing valves. NEWMAN, HENDER, & CO., Ltd., Woodchester, Gloucestershire, and ROST, R., 2f, Naunhoferstrasse, Leipsic, Germany. Oct. 12, 1933, No. 28249. [Class 135] A tap or valve for delivering a predetermined quantity of fluid comprises a slotted cylinder f communicating with the fluid inlet b and surrounding a spring-pressed valve mechanism normally preventing communication with the outlet d, and a spring-pressed outlet tube which when raised also raises the valve mechanism, communication between the inlet and outlet being established for a predetermined period when the tube is allowed to fall. The tube l is pressed downwardly by a spring u and can be moved upwardly by a handle x to an extent determined by a set-screw y, Seated on the inner end of the tube is a valve member k with a stem n extending through a second valve member m slidable in the cylinder f and normally seating on a ring i with a small clearance between it and the member k. A spring p of less strength than the spring u normally holds the members k, m in their lower positions. The inlet b communicates with the inside of the cylinder f through slots g in the cylinder f and a passage way 10 in the member m. A passage way 11 extends through the valve k but is normally closed by the guideway in the valve m. When the handle x is depressed, the tube l and member k are first moved upwardly until member k abuts against the member m and the end of the passage 11 is in communication with the inside of the cylinder f so that any water therein can pass into the tube l. Continued movement of the handle x lifts all the members l, k, m, as a unit, flow only occuring through the passage 10. When the handle x is released, the tube drops much more rapidly than the members k, m due to the difference in the strengths of the springs p, u, so that for a limited period the tube l is in full communication with the inlet b. In a modification, the cap e of the casing a is replaced by a fluid-containing vessel so as to obtain a greater velocity of flow due to the increased pressure obtained.
