Abstract

[Class 135] [Also in Group XIII] In an instantaneous water heater of the type in which opening a tap 25, Fig. 1, on the delivery side starts flow of water through the heater, which in turn causes the opening of a valve 43 supplying fuel to a burner, a water pressure governor 8 and the fuel valve 43 are actuated by separate diaphragms 6, 38 or pistons which are under the influence of a common Venturi 13 and are so arranged that the water pressure is under the control of the water pressure governor and flows fully before the fuel valve is fully opened. The diaphragm 38 controlling the gas supply is of considerably greater diameter than that 6 controlling the water. Springs 44, 7 are arranged on the valves. The diaphragms 6, 38 are connected to the Venturi by passages 32, 30 which have byepasses 34, 28 with one-way valves 35, 29 allowing the diaphragm 38 controll-' ing the gas to drop more rapidly than that 6 controlling the water during the closing of the' control valve after the outlet 25 from the heater is closed. A throttle valve 15, Fig. 2, in the water supply pipe between the water pressure governor and the Venturi moves axially and has a head with a projection shaped to control the flow smoothly, the head also having one or more passages 16 extending through it to determine a minimum rate of flow.
