Abstract

414,754. Automatic regulation; charging batteries. WESTINGHOUSE COOPER HEWITT GES., 6A, Kopenickerstrasse, Berlin. Feb. 10, 1933, Nos. 4077, 4078, and 4079. Convention dates, Feb. 16, 1932, March 23, 1932, and July 22, 1932. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug. 11, 1933.] [Class 38 (iv).] An increase of voltage is obtained from an A.C. source as the load increases by connecting in series with the load an iron-cored choke coil DR with a condenser C in parallel therewith. The coil and condenser combination is designed to produce a sharp bend in its current-voltage curve at a low load, where the phase displacement of its voltage vector is nearly zero, so that the succeeding increase of phase displacement causes a rise in consumption voltage, the drop of voltage in the combination remaining nearly constant. To produce saturation in the choke coil it has a closed magnetic circuit and iron of the highest permeability and low ironloss, e.g. a nickel-iron alloy is preferably employed. In the charging of batteries by dry surface or contact rectifiers R the combination causes the charging current to die away at a given cell voltage b, Fig. 4, and at a given minimum voltage a the charging current is reestablished in the manner of a highly sensitive relay. The combination of choke, condenser and rectifier when used without a battery is stated to produce an almost constant D.C. voltage. The rectifier need not be of the type referred to. The choke and condenser may be placed in the primary circuit of the supply transformer T. The choke may operate also as a smoothing coil or a coil DG may be used for smoothing.
