Abstract

237,538. Robinson, J. March 27, 1924 Thermionic valve circuits.-A regulating arrangement for a direct current circuit for avoiding changes of current due to generator ripples when the prime voltage is supplied from a generator, comprises in series with the circuit, a thermionic valve working at a constant saturation value, this being obtained by heating the filament to a constant temperature. In Fig. 2, the regulating valve 1 is in series with a load comprising a resistance 5 which is tapped at 6, 7, 8 and in Fig. 3 the filaments 9 of the valves of the wireless set to be regulated are included in series, tappings being made at 6, 7. The cascade arrangement shown in Fig. 5 comprises a second regulating valve 1<x> in series with a second resistance 5<x> across the resistance 5, the resistance 5<x> being tapped at 6<x>, 7<x>. The filament of the regulating valve may be heated by the mains, a rheostat being placed in series with it, and a three-electrode valve, may be employed with its anode grid connected together. Current smoothing means may also be used and may comprise in series with the circuits supplied an impedance and capacity in parallel or barretters may be used in the load circuit. If the supply is alternating the current is first rectified as by a valve, or, if the load is a number of valves of a wireless system the latter may be heated directly therefrom through a transformer, the grid and anode circuits being connected to a mid-point tapping of the secondary winding of the transformer.
