Abstract

A solution of casein obtained by treating casein with sodium flouride and ammonium chloride, or potassium fluoride, heating to form a gel and finally dissolving in a mild alkali to produce a slightly acidic solution, may be used in the manufacture of water paints, the emulsification with oils to form various coating materials and for paper-coating work.ALSO:A casein solution useful for paints, printing-inks &c. is obtained by treating casein with sodium fluoride and ammonium chloride, or potassium fluoride in the presence of water, maintaining at an elevated temperature until a thick gel is formed and dissolving this in a mild alkali solution such as borax, sodium benzoate or carbonate to give a solution of pH = 4,6 to 7,0. A strong alkali may be employed, followed by neutralization with a weak acid such as boric acid in excess. An example of the process is given.
