Abstract
411,655. Purifying exhaust. BLUM, R., 4, Duisburger Strasse, Berlin. April 26, 1933, No. 12215. Convention date, March 28. [Class 7 (ii).] In an arrangement for purifying the exhaust by adding an excess of from 35 to 50 per cent of air, and then passing the mixture over catalysts comprising noble and other metals applied in a fine state of sub-division to refractory carriers, all the piping &c. between the engine and the catalyst chambers is formed of materials -e.g. chromium-which cause no fresh formation of carbon. Other suggested materials are sichromal, silver, aluminium, copper, nickel or rustless steel ; the parts, which comprise the exhaust pipe b of the engine, a nozzle m<1> for the additional air and a mixing chamber c<1>, and which may, alternatively, be made of iron plated with these materials, are subsequently polished. Metals suggested as catalysts are platinum, gold, osmium, rhodium, silver, vanadium, molybdenum, titanium, nickel, a mixture of platinum and rhodium being especially suitable ; the carriers may be formed as plates n of chamotte having perforations, the total area of which is at least equal to that of the pipe b or as plates projecting from opposite walls of the chambers with staggered passages ; they are prepared by being allowed to absorb an aqueous salt solution, and are subsequently dried and the mass is then ignited or heated, preferably in a stream of hydrogen. An oxidic catalyst-e.g. hopcalite -may be used in conjunction with the noble metal catalyst. The air may be drawn in by injector action of the exhaust.
