Abstract
338,933. Gaisman, L., and Peachey, S. J. July 24, 1929. Exhaust, dealing with. - Exhaust gases are rendered innocuous by subjecting them to a catalytic reaction in a silencer containing a number of palladium-carrying discs. Air is supplied under pressure from an enginedriven pump through a pipe g to the exhaust manifold c, each disc f comprising two pieces of nickel gauze between which are inserted the pumice pebbles supporting the catalyst and asbestos. The chambers containing the discs f are lined with heat-retaining sleeves f<3>, which may be asbestos cloth, carrying the catalyst, so that the heat of the exhaust gases is retained to initiate the catlytic reaction, the heat of which is also conserved by the sleeves to maintain the action. The silencer chamber may be formed by a series of cup-shaped members a, the partitions a<1> having perforations arranged in staggered relation; the assembly is secured by bolts e. In a modified construction Fig. 2, a worm is fitted in the silencer chamber, the worm being wrapped with palladium carrying asbestos cloth tape and surrounded by a sleeve j of asbestos cloth. According to the first Provisional Specification the catalyst may be finely divided nickel and additional heat may be supplied to the exhaust gases after mixing with air.
