[Class 74 (ii).] Comparatively slender pelerine instruments, movable in one plane transversely to the needle line, are provided for loop-engaging purposes with notches &c. 21, Fig. 1, or with formations like a pin's head. Alternate sinkers or webholders 32, Fig. 7, may be adapted for use as pelerine instruments and may be flanked by blades 33 mounted in the same tricks. These blades assist in removing the loop from the associated pelerine sinker 32. Selection is made at, say, every third course by rockers 34 carrying a series of butts 20b. A battery of selecting cams 40 (Fig. 6, not shown) controlled by a trick wheel acts, each at its own level, on the butts 20b present on that level. Provision is made for repeating any given selection. The whole or approximately half of the pelerine instruments 20 may be put out of action when required. When they are separate from the sinkers they are mounted in line therewith in a tricked bed above the sinker cap 16. In the loop-receiving position of the instruments the hooked ends 21 lie within the needle circle and above the sinkers so as to elongate the corresponding sinker loops. Prior to projection of the needles the tension in the sinker loops is relaxed. Each instrument comprises two thin blades normally working together as one, but capable of springing apart to embrace the corresponding sinker on being depressed by a cam 31. The instruments are returned to horizontal by a spring plate 28 acting on butts 20<a>. There may be as many instruments as needles. Fabrics with double and/or single pelerine stitches in adjacent sinker wales and other fabrics can be produced by selecting odd-numbered instruments in one course, even-numbered in the next and so on.
