Abstract
410,720. Centrifugal compressors. AVIONS, H. M. D. FARMAN, 149, Rue de Silly, Billancourt, Seine, France. Jan. 26, 1934, No. 2811. Convention date, Jan. 26, 1933. [Class 110 (i).] Additional impellers can be coupled at will to the main shaft of a compressor for supercharging aircraft engines. The impeller 2 is mounted on a shaft 15 which is connected to the main shaft by a centrifugal clutch 24. The clutch comprises a plate 33 fixed to the shaft, a member 46, 47 loose on the shaft, and friction discs 35, 36. Spring pressed pivoted weights 48 couple together the plate 33 and the discs 34, 35 and the member 46, 47 is driven by lugs 40. The weights 48 are disengaged by a clutch lever 55 and thrust bearing 50. The impeller 1 is permanently coupled to the main shaft by a centrifugal clutch 23. The clutch lever 55 controls a valve 13 by which the suction of the impeller 1 is directly connected to the atmosphere when the impeller 2 is not in operation and the clutch may be controlled by an aneroid. Speed changing means may be introduced.
