Abstract

434,242. Centrifugal pumps. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Aug. 31, 1934, No. 25151. Convention date, Aug. 31, 1933. [Class 7 (ii)] [See also Group XXVI] A two-stage centrifugal compressor is mounted with the inlet 20 nearest to the engine casing 10. The impellers 33, 54 of the low and high pressure stages are mounted back to back separated by the casing wall 15. From the two scrollshaped discharge chambers 21 the air passes to a cooler 37 and thence through a carburetter, if used, to the high stage inlet 48. The impellers are mounted on a hollow shaft surrounding an extension of the crank-shaft, and driven therefrom through spur-gearing and a friction coupling 67. The gear casing is integral with the inlet casing 48 from which the carburetter and cooler are supported. The inlet valve 26 to the low-stage and the throttle valve 51 from the carburetter are interconnected by the linkwork shown in Fig. 4, so that by moving the lever 88 the valve 51 alone is first opened until the pin 83 reaches the end of a slot 82. Both valves 51, 26 are then operated ; owing to a stop 92 and slotted connection 93, the movement of the valve 26 is continued after valve 51 is fully opened. In its closed position, perforations 29 in the valve 26 pass sufficient air for " idling," and cooling the impeller 33.
