Abstract

408,787. Lenses. WARMISHAM, A., 1625, Hinman Avenue, Evanston, Illinois, U.S.A., and KAPELLA, Ltd., 104, Stoughton Street, Leicester. March 2, 1933, Nos. 6316 and 20047. [Class 97 (i).] Relates to objectives of Petzval type com. prising a front convergent compound member and a rear member consisting of a divergent and a convergent component. To improve the flatness of the field and to reduce the over-correction of oblique spherical aberration, the convergent component of the rear member is compounded of three elements, the internal element being collective and of relatively high refractive index and the two outer elements being divergent menisci of lower refractive index, and the contact surface of the front compound member is made divergent and concave towards the longer conjugate. Axial zonal spherical aberration may be reduced by adding in front of the front compound member an air-spaced collective element, as shown, which may be planoconvex but is preferably of meniscus form, and still further improvement may be obtained by placing in front of this additional element a second air-spaced collective element, preferably plano-convex. Data are given for the example shown having an aperture of f /1.3 and corrected for a semi field of 14‹. Specification 258,092, [Class 97 (i)], is referred to.
