Abstract
Finely divided barium or strontium carbonat<e> or a mixture thereof is obtained by precipitation with carbon dioxide of a solution of the oxide or oxides in a glycol such as ethylene glycol or in a polyhydric alcohol such as glycerine. A solution of the corresponding nitrate or nitrite in glycol may be added to the mixture of carbonate and glycol, which may then be used for coating cathodes, the coated cathode being heated in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide to evaporate the glycol. Precipitation of the carbonate may be effected at elevated temperature, for instance, at the boiling point of the solution, and its particle size be controlled by varying the rate of admission of carbon dioxide or the concentration or temperature of the solution.
