Abstract
406,807. Arc-rupturing in switches; oil-break switches. PAILIN, Ltd., F., and PAILIN, G., Buckley Street, Higher Openshaw, Manchester. Nov. 4, 1932, No. 31111. [Class 38 (v).] Automatic circuit-breakers.-Arcing is suppressed by means of a combustible body, such as gunpowder, which upon ignition develops with extreme rapidity a large volume of gas which is caused to force an oil blast across each arc gap. Ignition may be effected by means of a current obtained directly or indirectly from the controlled circuit, or by other than electrical means controlled by the circuit. In a three-phase arrangement, each phase has a combustible body and all three are simultaneously ignited by relay means on an overload occurring in any phase, either at the moment of opening or immediately beforehand. The movable electrode a passes through, so as to obstruct, a passage b leading to a pipe c, at the head of which is a chamber containing an explosive capsule e adapted to be ignited by current from a lead f. When the capsule is ignited, the pressure of the generated gas acts on a lever j, k to release the movable electrode a and also on the surface of the oil in c, so driving the oil across the arc.
