923,568. Actuation of switches; switch contacts. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Feb. 5, 1960 [Feb. 20, 1959], No. 4183/60. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XXXVI] A circuit-opening device comprises a socket 12 co-operable with a plug 14 whose pilot piston 40 and piston 42 are manually driven into a chamber 20 formed by the base 18 and side walls 16, so that members 16, 42 are rigidly engaged, Fig. 3 (not shown), this being facilitated by slots 22 in the walls 16 and by making members 12, 14 of soft malleable material. The socket 12 contains recesses 34, each holding a squib 36 connected by wires 72 to a firing circuit, closure of which ignites the squibs 36 to increase the pressure in chamber 20 and eject the plug 14. The latter is slidable in an insulating housing 54 carried by the socket 12 and having openings 66 through which project springs 68 allowing opening of the plug 14 but preventing its reclosure, Fig. 2 (not shown). The arc between members 12, 14 is extinguished by the gases produced by squib ignition, these gases being exhausted through the openings 66. The housing 54 may be fitted after members 12, 14 have been assembled, may be carried by the plug 14, in which case the latter is fixed and socket 12 is movable, or may be dispensed with altogether.
