Abstract
<PICT:0405540/III/1> <PICT:0405540/III/2> In apparatus for distilling and cracking oils comprising a preheating coil 8 and a cracking coil 9 the coils are connected by valves 13, 14 and pipes 16, 17 to a fractionating column 3 so that by closing the valve 13 and opening the valve 14 the cracking coil can be isolated for cleaning and the oil from the coil 1 passed direct to the column 3. The coil 1 is heated by waste gases passing from the furnace 2 up a vertical tower 1 The pipes 16, 17 lead to two containers 4, 5 placed on opposite sides of the column 3, Fig. 3, and containing expansion valves 6, 7. The containers are connected by valved pipes 28, 29, 32 to a residue tank 20 and a reservoir 22 separated by a tray 21 and interconnected by a valved by-pass 23. Residues are accumulated in the tank 20 until the valves 6, 7 are covered so that when one of the valves is opened the injection action of the entering oil causes a circulation of residues from the tank 20 through the pipe 27 to the container 5 and thence through the pipe 28 back to the tank 20.
