Abstract
405,380. Nonconducting coverings for sound. LINES, J. E., 36, Whitchurch Gardens, Edgware, Middlesex, and BYRD, A. A. A., Chase Side, Crescent Road, Chingford, Essex. Sept. 13, 1932, No. 25471. [Class 64 (ii).] Sound - deadening material is associated with the wall of a tunnel so as to form one or more intervening spaces or pockets communicating with the interior of the tunnel through suitable openings. The material is preferably fireproof and may be formed by rolling or moulding a moist mixture of disintegrated pumice stone or cork and asbestos with a small percentage of cement or other binding agent, with or without gas generating material to form a cellular structure, and with or without reinforcing material such as woven or reticulated material, expanded metal &c. In Fig. 1, the sound deadening material b is nailed &c. to a wood or metal framework e and is preferably spaced from the frame by distance pieces k. The space d between the material b and the tunnel lining a communicates with the interior of the tunnel as through openings f, longitudinal slots f<1> or both ; the openings f may have baffles g, Fig. 7. Baffles may also be arranged in the space d and the face of the material adjacent the space d may be rough or ribbed ; further, fibrous material such as slag wool may be placed in the space d, or a coating of sound deadening material may be applied direct to the lining a. In tunnels lined with inwardly flanged metal segments, plates t, Fig. 10, may be forced over nuts ul of bolts connecting the segments and carry studs x for securing the material b which is spaced at least from the longitudinal flanges of the segments. The material b may extend over the sides and crown of the tunnel, or over the sides only.
