Abstract

404,646. Thermionic valves. FREEDMAN, P., 6, Hillside Gardens, Highgate, London. June 11, 1932, No. 16565. [Class 39 (i).] In an indirectly heated cathode in which the heater is not completely enclosed in an insulating envelope, and in which the spacing between the heater and the cathode is such that the capacity effect between these elements is extremely small, a metallic screen is inserted round the heater, and is connected to the cathode, so that it prevents detrimental discharges between the heater and the cathode. The screen may be a helical wire or a gauze or mesh 6, Figs. 2 and 3. The cathode 3 may have inturned ends as in Fig. 2, contacting with the screen, or may have end plates 7, Fig. 3, of metal or of insulating material such as magnesia. In a modification the screen is of metallic sheet inside the cathode 3, and is of open work construction such as gauze around the ends of the heater projecting from the cathode.
