Abstract

492,983. Thermionic valves. MALPAS, H. A. May 26, 1937, No. 14599. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i)] An electron-discharge valve has an anode, a thermionic cathode, preferably indirectlyheated and a control grid of wire having a diameter of 0À1 1 mm. or less bent into a helix and supported by notched metal rods which are wholly or partially coated with a thin layer of insulation so that the turns of the helix are insulated from one another and at their minimum distance from the cathode are separated from it by 0À5 mm. or less. The insulation may be the oxide of a metal such as nickel, aluminium or magnesium and need not be of higher resistance than a few hundred ohms. The grid wires may also be coated with insulation where they touch the support. In a modification, notched thin-walled tubes of compressed magnesium oxide are slipped over wire rods. More than one grid may be provided. Very large amplifications are said to be obtainable with a single valve.
