Abstract

404,603. Separating solid materials. ELIE, A. D., Antanimena, Tananarive, Madagascar. April 14, 1932, No. 10698. Void [Abridged as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, April 19, 1932]. [Classes 72, 82 (ii), and 117.] Apparatus for separating granular materials of different shapes and kinds comprises inclined surfaces on which the materials move and means such as gaseous or liquid currents, and mechanical or magnetic devices are caused to vary the natural paths of the particles under the action of gravity in different degrees. As shown in Fig. 1, the material is delivered to a series of inclined planes 1-4 arranged in zig-zag formation and at the lower edge of one or more of the planes a gaseous or liquid current from a source 10 is caused to divert the material from its natural path. Alternatively, an electromagnet 7 acts under the planes to retard the movement down the plane of certain of the constituents. The separated products are collected in the receptacles 8, 9. Fig. 2, shows an apparatus in which a single plane 1 co-acts with an inclined endless band 11 which at its upper end throws the material carried forward into different compartments of a receptacle 13. Another part of the material runs down the band and is delivered to compartments of a receptacle 14. A liquid or gaseous current, or a magnetic field may act on the materials at the lower edge of the plane 1 to produce a preliminary separation. In Fig. 4 (not shown), the endless band may be replaced by a rotating cylinder. According to further forms of construction, the inclined surfaces may be inverted cones, and the apparatus may be arranged to work in successive stages. Fig. 7 shows an endless band 31 running round horizontally and vertically disposed rollers 32, 33 so that the upper run of the band is skew. The materials move differentially on the band and are collected at different places in receptacles 35. The band may be made of textile material, rubber, sheetmetal &c. and may be wetted with an oil to increase the adhesion of some of the materials. Alternatively a stationary surface, which is vibrated, may be used. This apparatus may be combined with gaseous or liquid currents, magnetic fields, &c.
