Abstract

254,030. Koizumi; M. April 3, 1925. Magnetic separators.-In an electromagnetic separator for separating or concentrating minerals of the kind in which the separation &c. is effected by a rotary or shifting field created by a polyphase alternating current, the mineral mixed with water is fed into a chamber 1 divided into an upper hopper part 2, a separating chamber 3 and a lower part subdivided into a tailings chamber 4, a middlings chamber 5 and a concentrates chamber 6. The mineral passes from the hopper 2 through an adjustable opening 9 between a fixed bottom 7 and a movable bottom 8 into the chamber 3 where it is forced by water sprayed from a perfotated pipe 11 on to a bottomless dish 12. Below the dish 12 are separators 14 in the shape of bottomless dishes in the inner circumference of which are thin plates or vanes 15 which extend downwardly and towards the wall of the vessel 1. The material coming into contact with the vanes 15 is given a rotary motion and is then acted upon by the magnetic field produced by a magnet 17 surrounding the vessel 1, the particles of pure mineral being caused to move up the surfaces of the dishes 14 into a passage 13 from whence they pass into the chamber 6. The middlings or next purest concentrates fall into the chamber 5 and the impurities fall from the inner edges of the dishes 14 into the chamber 4. A cylinder 16 supported by the bottom 8 is inserted in the space between the vanes 15 to assist the separation. In a modification, the tailings are led to a second series of dishes 14, an additional water spraying; pipe being used, and the magnet may be mounted inside the chamber 1. In a further modification in which a shifting field is used the field is produced by a flat magnet mounted on each side of the container 1.
