Abstract

404,369. Air - compressors. LEAD WOOL CO., Ltd., BALL, F. L., and MOULTON, F., Snodland, Kent. July 18, 1932, No. 20336. [Class 8 (i).] Actuating by fluid-pressure motors ; regulating compression valves, arrangement of.-A standard internal-combustion engine 1, such as a Ford engine, is mounted back to back with a similar engine 2 from which the engine head, poppet valves, cam shaft and ignition devices have been removed, the head being replaced by a compressor head with automatic valves, cooled by a jacket through which water is circulated by an impeller driven from the shaft of a fan 15 drawing an air current through a radiator 16. The two engines are bolted together, and their cylinders are reversely offset from the line of the crankshaft. The compressor head is common to the compressor cylinders and is partitioned by a longitudinal plate into spaces containing the inlet and outlet valves respectively, these valves being spring- pressed ported discs between plates having ports of which a port in one plate registers with a port in the disc. Excessive pressure acting on a diaphragm 48, Fig. 2, depresses a thimble 44 carrying fingers which hold the inlet valve disc down, and the valve continuously open. The air is stored in a tank 20, Fig. 1, and passes through a pipe 52, Fig. 9, to a chamber 53 which a spring-pressed valve 54 tends to close. On rise of pressure, the air passes partly into the pipes 69, 51 leading to the diaphragm, and partly to a cylinder 63 wherein a piston carries a rod actuating a lever 8 to close the engine throttle.
