Abstract

Resin acid esters are combined with a mixture of a hardening condensation product of phenol or cresol and formaldehyde (resol) and at least an equal quantity of a soluble and permanently fusible condensation product of paraldehyde and phenol (novolac). Phenoldialcohols prepared by condensation of phenol and formaldehyde in the presence of alkali may be used as the resol. In examples (1) a cresol prepared by condensing phenol and formaldehyde in the presence of caustic soda is mixed with a novolac prepared from paraldehyde and cresol in the presence of hydrochloric acid and the product heated with a glycerine cetyl alcohol or phenol ester of colophony or a glycerine ester of copal acids. (2) A resol prepared by condensing cresol and formaldehyde in the presence of acid is mixed with a novolac and heated with a colophony glycerine ester. (3) A phenoldialcohol prepared from phenol or cresol and formaldehyde in the presence of alkali is mixed with a novolac and heated with colophony glycerine ester.ALSO:Resin acid esters are combined with a mixture containing a resol (a hardening condensation product of phenol or cresol and formaldehyde such as a phenoldialcohol) and a novolac (a soluble and permanently fusible condensation product of phenol and paraldehyde).
