Abstract

Urea-formaldehyde-phenol condensation products.-Urea or thio-urea, a phenol or a derivative thereof, and an aldehyde such as formaldehyde are melted together without the aid of aqueous solution and heated to complete the condensation. If the urea preponderates over the phenol, the reaction mixture must be neutral or alkaline, but if the phenol preponderates, acid, alkaline, or neutral condensing agents may be used. A mixture of paraformaldehyde and urea may first be made and molten phenol added thereto; the whole may then be heated until brittle when cold. Further heating converts it into an infusible product. Suitable proportions are 100 parts of phenol, 130 of urea, and 140 of paraformaldehyde; or 100 of phenol, 200 of urea, 170 of paraformaldehyde, and 2 of potassium oxalate. The resins may be ground to fine powders which are easily fusible. They mav be used with fillers. Specifications 1921/08, 256,711, and 280,520 are referred to.
