Abstract

A phenol, paraformaldehyde or its equivalent, such as formaldehyde, trioxymethylene or an equivalent methylene body such as methylol or hexamethylenetetramine, a polyhydric alcohol and a polybasic acid or its anhydride are all heated together in the absence of a catalyst if desired in a closed vessel to give a resinous product. The paraformaldehyde may be added in one or two stages the final product being soluble in acetone or alcohol. In examples: (1) phenol, paraformaldehyde, phthalic anhydride, and glycerol are heated together to form a non-hardening resin, or phenol, paraformaldehyde, glycerol, and phthalic anhydride are heated together and the pulverized product is heated with further paraformaldehyde giving a product which, when dissolved in acetone may be used for impregnating purposes such as impregnating laminated boards of high dielectric strength; (2) phenol, paraformaldehyde, glycerol, phthalic anhydride, and maleic anhydride are heated together, ground up with paraformaldehyde and further heated to give a resin soluble in acetone; (3) phenol, paraformaldehyde, glycerol, and maleic anhydride are heated together, ground up with paraformaldehyde, further heated and dissolved in acetone.
