Description
Many methods for producing cast transparent phenol-aldehyde resins are known. The main disadvantage of all these methods is the need for a long-lasting (at least two-day) heating of the resol at normal pressure to put it in an insoluble and infusible state. Such prolonged heating can be avoided only if expensive autoclaves are used.
In addition, many of the known methods provide light-resistant products. The best way to obtain high-quality cast resites is to carry out condensation in the presence of an alkaline catalyst, followed by neutralization with organic acids, predominantly lactic acid. However, in this way you can only get opaque res-ity. To obtain transparent rezites, it was proposed, after neutralizing the alkali and dehydration, to add glycerol and other additives to the resole, but these additives are known to significantly reduce the rate of curing of the resols, which is already very insignificant.
It was found that it is possible to significantly increase the rate of curing of the resols obtained by alkaline condensation followed by neutralization of the alkali with an organic acid, and at the same time to obtain completely transparent light-resistant, if you add a condensation product of polybasic acids with polyhydric alcohols (glyptals) to the resol after neutralization. There is no moment of addition to the reaction.
The authors have found that, instead of the finished glyphtal, one can add to the resol, after neutralizing the alkali, products that serve to obtain glyptal, i.e. a mixture of polybasic acid with a polyhydric alcohol. During the subsequent drying, acid and alcohol bind at the same time and as a result a complex resin is formed, which, after a brief heating, turns into a transparent non-meltable and insoluble product. By reducing the amount of injected mixture of polybasic acid and polyhydric alcohol, it is possible to obtain translucent resins with a wide variety of properties.
