Abstract

Coating-compositions are prepared comprising in solution a hardenable resinous formaldehyde condensation product, an accelerator or hardening catalyst and a quantity of free formaldehyde over and above that required to form the final insoluble resin. The presence of the formaldehyde stabilizes the coating composition. In examples: (1) a solution of an urea-formaldehyde resin in butyl alcohol is mixed with a solution of paraformaldehyde in butyl alcohol containing hydrochloric acid; (2) a solution of a phenol-formaldehyde resin in ethyl alcohol is mixed with alcoholic hydrochloric acid and a solution of paraformaldehyde in ethylene glycol monoethyl ether; (3) a solution of dimethylolurea and a castor oil modified alkyd resin in ethylene glycol monoethyl ether is heated and then mixed with a solution of paraformaldehyde in butyl alcohol containing hydrochloric acid.
