Abstract

Condensation products capable of air drying are prepared by condensing a methylolurea or thiourea dissolved or suspended in an organic hydroxyl solvent in the substantial absence of water with anhydrous formaldehyde in the presence of an acid catalyst. Other resins such as natural resins, phenol-formaldehyde resins, chlorinated diphenyl resins and alkyd resins may be added during or after the condensation. The products may be used as lacquers or coating compositions. In examples, monomethylolurea is condensed with paraformaldehyde in the presence of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether and hydrochloric acid or butyl alcohol and phthalic acid.
