Abstract

Relates to varnishes, impregnating solutions, lacquers, enamels, &c., containing a reactive phenol-oil-aldehyde resin which may be cured by baking. A "phenol-oil-composition" made by treating phenol with a fatty oil in the presence of a converting agent such as phosphoric acid, aluminium chloride, &c., is condensed with aqueous formaldehyde or other methylene-containing compound in the presence of a high-boiling solvent which retards gelation, and water is removed from the product at a temperature not substantially higher than 120 DEG C. Solvents specified are butanol, amyl alcohol, and ethylene glycol mono-ethyl ether. The removal of water from the reaction product may be effected by vacuum distillation, by adding toluene or other hydrocarbon forming a constant boiling mixture boiling below 120 DEG C. and also below the boiling points of the solvent and of its constant-boiling mixture with water, or where the high-boiling solvent is butanol, a further quantity of butanol may be added to the reaction product so that the water is removed as a constant-boiling mixture with butanol and sufficient butanol remains to keep the resin in solution. Specifications 267,736 and 329,313, [both in Class 95, Paints &c.], are referred to.ALSO:Relates to varnishes, impregnating-solutions, lacquers, enamels &c., containing a reactive phenol-oil-aldehyde resin which may be cured by baking.
