Abstract

Epoxy resins are modified by treating them in solution with a monomeric silane or a mixture thereof of the general formula RnSiX4-n (where R is hydrocarbon radical, X a halogenatom or a hydroxyl, alkoxy, aryloxy or aralkoxy group) or a corresponding partially condensed siloxane containing reactive OH groups, whilst slowly adding 2 to 100 per cent of water based on the silane or siloxane. The mixture is boiled under reflux, water is removed by azeotropic distillation and the resin diluted. Catalysts, e.g. phosphoric acid, sulphuric acid, acetic acid, oxalic acid, alkali and alkaline earth stearates, palmitates and naphthenates, aluminium chloride, iron chloride and alkali and alkaline earth sulphides may be used. The epoxy resins are condensation products of epichlorhydrin with a polyhydric phenol or a novolak. In Example 1, an epoxy resin from epichlorhydrin and 4,41-dihydroxy diphenyl butane dissolved in xylene, butanol and acetyl glycollic acid is reacted with phenyl triethoxy silane in the presence of aqueous phosphoric acid. In Example 2 an epoxy resin from diphenylol propane is reacted with an aqueous butanol-xylene solution of a partially condensed silanol made by hydrolysing diethyl dichlorsilane. In Example 3, a solution of an epoxy resin from p-tertiary-butyl phenolformaldehyde novolak and epichlorhydrin is reacted with a mixture of phenyltributoxy silane and methyl triethoxy silane. The products may be used as glass-to-metal adhesives and as a wire lacquer when in combination with phenol or alkyd resins.
