Abstract

1,174,873. Modified epoxy resins; coating compositions. MOBIL OIL CORP. 23 July, 1968 [3 Aug., 1967], No. 35089/68. Headings C3B and C3R. An organic solvent soluble resin which is a high M.W. substantially linear polyester containing hydroxyl and epoxy groups. It is prepared by reacting a resinous diepoxide with one or more aromatic carboxylic acids of the type used to prepare linear polyesters from ethylene glycol, e.g. tere- or iso-phthalic acids or benzophenone or benzosulphone dicarboxylic acids. A molar ratio of diepoxide : dicarboxylic acid of 3 : 2 to 6 : 5 is used. Reaction takes place in an organic solvent, e.g. a ketone, at a resin solids concentration of 50% by wt., in the presence of a basic catalyst and at a temp. such as to avoid condensation with the hydroxyl groups present. Reaction is continued until the acid number is <20. The preferred starting material is a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A having M.W. 350-2000. The dicarboxylic acid may be added in stages with a progressive reduction in the concentration of the reaction soln. The products have low epoxy functionality and do not readily cure with conventional epoxy resin hardeners. However, they readily react on heating with aminoplasts and may be used therewith in curable coating compositions.
