Abstract
A synthetic resin is prepared by heating together a natural resin (e.g. colophony, gum rosin, or run Congo), cresylic acid having a m-cresol content of not less than 50 per cent, and an anhydrous polymer of formaldehyde (e.g. paraformaldehyde or trioyxmethylene), until condensation of the three ingredients has taken place, and subsequently, preferably after a vacuum distillation, heating the product with a polyhydric alcohol (e.g. glycerol or polyethylene glycol) in the presence of a small quantity of a compound of an alkaline earth metal soluble in the reaction mix (e.g. lime, calcium acetate or magnesium borate) as catalyst. The final product may be vacuum distilled. It is preferable that condensation be carried out under a reflux condenser so adjusted so that the most volatile constituent may escape; that the conditions of time and temperature be so adjusted during the final step that the product has an acid number of about 15; that the m-cresol content of the cresylic acid used be between 50 and 60 per cent; and that the formaldehyde polymer be employed in slightly more than two molecular proportions relative to cresol. In examples, (I) pale green rosin, cresylic acid (m-cresol, 60 per cent) and paraformaldehyde are condensed under reflux, and then vacuum distilled, the residue being condensed with glycerol in the presence of lime and then vacuum distilled; (II) WW rosin, cresylic acid (m-cresol, 50 per cent) and paraformaldehyde are treated as in example I. It is stated that the mixed distillates obtained in example I may be used as a disinfectant. British Specification 259,030, [Class 2 (iii)], and French Specification 592,584 are referred to.ALSO:In a process for preparing synthetic resin by heating pale gum rosin, cresylic acid, and paraformaldehyde under reflux, vacuum distilling, adding glycerine and lime, and again vacuum distilling, the mixed distillates, containing rosin acids, cresylic acid, formaldehyde, glycerol, and water, are stated to be of use as a disinfectant.
