Abstract

402,499. Driving-gear. FRANKS, E. A., 5, Caegwyn Road, Whitchurch, Glamorgan, and FRANKS MOTORS, Ltd., 9, Western Mail Chambers, Cardiff. June 17, 1932, No. 17223. [Class 7 (ii).] A number of pawls and toothed ratchets with the points of drive co-operation between the pawls and the teeth of the ratchets arranged in out-of-phase relation are combined with internalcombustion engines in order to convert the movements of an oscillating power member into unidirectional rotation. An arm 1 rocked by a cranked shaft 39 has adjustably mounted on it a rod 41 connected to two ratchet mechanisms carried by shafts 43, 52. Each mechanism comprises several ratchets and radial spring- pressed pawls 46. Either the teeth of the ratchets or the pawls are staggered ; or a single ratchet with helical teeth may be used in place of a set with staggered teetn. continuous motion may be derived from the ratchets by gearing the shafts together. The pawls comprise blocks 46 adapted to move in guides formed by the sides of pieces 47 bolted together by bolts 50.
