Abstract
250,336. Kingsland, W. Jan. 12, 1925. Variable - speed ratchet gearing comprises a variable lever 1, Fig. 1, which projects hetween or at right angles to a pair of geared ratchet-driven shafts 11, 11<a>. The lever 1 is oscillated from a driving crank 6 and carries a pair of pawls 9, 9a which engage ratchet wheels 10, 10<a> on the shafts 11, 11<a> respectively. The speed is varied by moving the lever fulcrum 2, or by moving the pivot connection 8 of the pawls, or by moving the pivot connection 3 of' the driving connecting-rod 4. The shafts 11, 11<a> are constantly connected by toothed wheels 12, 12<a>, and a shaft 20, Fig. 9, may be driven in either direction by a wheel 19 slidable into mesh with wheels 18, 18<a>, alternatively. Instead of a simple lever, a lever sliding upon another may be used, and free-wheel mounted discs, such as 13, 13<a>, Fig. 13, may replace the simple pawl and ratchet. A suitable improved ratchet is shown in Fig. 10. A rod 14 extending from the variable lever 1 carries a wedge block 26 in a housing 24 oscillating about the shaft 10. This block when moving to the left thrusts a grip block 25 into frictional engagement with a rotor 22. A spring 26<a> raises the gripper on the return stroke. The gripper 25 and rotor 22 may be formed with teeth for positive driving. An adaptation to an internal combustion engine is shown in Fig. 13. The engine pistons 29, 30 are connected directly to the variable lever 1. A wheel 36 and rod 34 are provided for starting the engine.
