[Class 100 (iv).] Ink-ribbon mechanism particularly for use in duplicating- arrangements for typewriters, of the kind described in Specification 402,484, comprises ribbon spools mounted on a horizontal shaft secured to a frame travelling with the carriage, the spools being normally retarded lightly by brakes which are arranged outside the hubs of the end spools, and are adapted on operation of the ribbon-feeding mechanism to retard further and, preferably, lock the spools. When only one spool is employed, the brakes are arranged on opposite sides of the hub. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the spools L have hubs 17 revoluble on a shaft 13 secured to a frame K which is connected to the carriage B and runs on a rail 8. The spools are separated by spacing-discs 14 having key-hole slots engaging flats on the shaft. The outer spacing-disc engages a brakecollar 22 abutting on a spring 23 provided with an adjusting-screw 21. The inner spacing-disc engages a brake-disc 24 abutting on a lever 30 which is fulcrummed on the frame K and engages a cam 32 on a shaft 33 connected to linkage 36, 37 operated by the line-spacing and ribbon-feeding lever. Before completion of the ribbon-feeding movement, the cam is rocked and the disc 24 is displaced to increase the braking- pressure and, preferably, lock the spools, thereby causing the ribbons to be tightened during the final part of the feed-movement.
