Index-type-wheel machines; case-shift mechanism.-In machines comprising a type-wheel which is rotated for character-selection and swung downwards for impression by means of a knob secured thereto, the type-wheel is adapted to be rotated and moved axially for character-selection. In the machine shown in the Figure, a type-wheel a provided with rows of types is secured to a sleeve d which can turn and slide on a rod b trunnioned in brackets c<1>. The sleeve is provided with a knob e and an index drum f which bears characters corresponding to the types and is set with reference to a pointer g. The knob is turned or moved axially, or both movements are employed, to select a type, and is then depressed to effect impression. During the impression movement, the type-wheel a passes over an ink roller z mounted on a lever z<1> which is held in normal position by a spring z<3>. Aligning for impression.-A vertical comb h in the plane of the rod d co-operates with the rim e<1> of the knob e and a toothed disc j<1> secured thereto to align the selected type. Letter-spacing mechanism.-A rack o on the carriage l co-operates with a pawl n, pivoted on a sliding rod p having a head r which is held by springs s, x in engagement with a plate q on the rod b. On depressing the type-wheel, the pawl is swung by a spring u and when the type-wheel returns, the pawl re-engages the rack and effects letter-spacing. For word-spacing or carriage-release, the rod p is retracted by means of a thumbpiece v.
