359,192. Typewriters. ROYAL TYPEWRITER CO., Inc., 2, Park Avenue, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Handley, G. F. ; 7030, 83rd Street, Glendale, New York, U.S.A.) Oct. 11, 1930, No. 30477. Convention date, Nov. 1, 1929. [Class 100 (iv).] Paper-carriages; shift-key actions; key locks.-A carriage-centring stop is movable into the path of the carriage and is adapted to release the shift-key lock without permitting the shift mechanism to return to normal position. The machine shown in the Figure includes, as described in Specification 247,512, [Class 100 (iv), Typewriters &c.], a carriage C mounted on a rocking shift-frame B which is connected by a link 14 to a shift-key lever 16 provided with a locking-key 23 and an arm 21 for locking the shift frame in shift and normal position respectively. A centring-stop 38 pivoted on the left-hand side plate A is formed with lugs 43, 46 for engaging the carriage and a lug 22 on the arm 21 respectively. To centre the carriage, the stop is moved forwards, in opposition to a spring 41, by means of a finger 44 and the carriage is released and permitted to run into engagement with the lug 43, the carriage-spring holding the parts in engagement. If the carriage has been shifted, the lug 46 raises slightly the arm 21 and thereby permits a spring 26 to release the shiftlock key 23, the shift frame remaining in displaced position. To release the stop and permit return of the shift frame, the carriage is moved slightly, this movement being preferably effected during application of the cover of the machine by causing the cover to press inwards the line-spacing lever.
