Abstract
395,556. Typewriters &c. REMING- 'TON TYPEWRITER CO., Ilion, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Hart, F. A. ; Sagamore Road, Shippan, Stamford, Connecticut, U.S.A.) Oct. 27, 1932, No. 30108. Convention date, Dec. 1, 1931. [Class 100 (iv).] Relay platen-shift and case-shift mechanisms.- In mechanism comprising a cam adapted to be connected to a driving-shaft on operation of the shift-key, means other than the cam is provided for holding the shiftable part in the shift position so long as the shift-key is held down. The mechanism may comprise separable members which are mounted on two relatively movable sections of the framework and are moved into co-operative position when the sections are brought together. The shift rail may be mounted on a number of interconnected levers which are arranged in the plane of movement of the shift rail and may be connected to a counterbalancing spring. As applied to the computing-typewriter described in Specification 374,109, a rocking arm 44, Fig. 1, having a roller 46 co-operating with a cam 30, is connected by a spring 49 to a rocking arm 48 having a pin 53 engaging a link 55 connected to the platen-shift rail 56. The cam is mounted loosely on a driving-shaft 13 and carries a spring-urged pawl 35 adapted to engage a toothed wheel 32 fast on the driving- shaft. The pawl is normally held in disengaged position by a rocking arm 38 which is held in contact with a stop 114 by a spring 113. The pawl-spring is prevented from turning the cam by co-operation of a high part 30a thereof with a roller 41 on a spring-urged arm 40. A pin 109 on the arm 38 engages a shoulder 111 on a link 102 which can rock and slide on a pin 104 and is held in normal position by a spring 105. The link engages a pin 100 on a lever 96 having pin-and-fork connection 98 to the shift-key lever 79. On depression of the shift-key or shift-lock key, the lever 96 depresses the link 102, the arm 38 is disengaged from the pawl, and the cam is coupled to the driving-shaft for one revolution, the cam co-operating initially with a pin 116 to rock rearwards the link 102 and thereby permit the arm 38 to return into position for disengaging the pawl. During rotation of the cam, the arms 44, 48 are raised and the platen is shifted, the spring 49 yielding when the platen frame 65 is arrested by the stops 68. So long as the shift-key lever is held in depressed position, the platen is maintained in shifted position by a spring-urged latch 71 having a shoulder 74 for engaging a roller 76 on the arm 44. A slide 91, arranged between pins 89, 95 on the shift-key lever and the latch, releases the latch on return of the shift-key lever. The link 55 is mounted in a frame section 10 which supports the machine and is hinged on a frame section 12 carrying the driving-shaft 13 and the associated members. A shift-rail mounting, suitable for long carriages, is shown in Fig. 7 and comprises a shift rail 125 pivotally connected . to bell-cranks 119 which are pivoted below the top plate 60a and are connected by a link 130. The bell-cranks are arranged in the vertical plane of the shift rail. A long counterbalancing-spring 134 is arranged between a stationary lug 135, and an adjusting-screw 132 mounted on the link 130. Preferably, the bell cranks are pivoted on lugs 117 and have forked ends 120 pivotally connected to arms 121 having heads 123 riveted to the shift rail. One of the bell cranks may be connected to an adjustable link 136 which passes through a guide-opening in a bracket 141 and is provided with a lug 145 for cooperating with the pin 53 of the above-described shift mechanism.
