Another object of the invention is to provide power actuated mechanism for combined computing and typewriting machines which is of such anature that there is no substantial diflerence between the load imposed on the source oi power 20 when numeral keys are depressed and both the computing mechanism and typewrlting means are operated and the load imposed when a key other than a numeral key is depressed and only the typewriting mechanism is operated.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in the construction and arransement'ot parts that will appear from the following description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, the novel features being the end or the speci- 30 pointed out in the claims at flcation.
Referring to the drawing, l is revoiubly mounted in the frame of the machine, not shown herein. Plvoted in the frame 86 are a plurality of type bars 2, only one which is shown in the drawing. Mounted on each of the type bars are a plurality oi types 3 adapted to engage the printing point on the platen when the type bar is actuated. Certain of the types may be 40 adapted to print letters. and others, such as the type shown, are for printing numerical characters. The type bars are all pivoted on the usual curved pivot rod or wire 4. Each of the type bars is pivoted to a toggle lever at 5, having one arm of an arm 0 forming the 7 other member 0! a toggle, the arm 0 being pivotally mounted on a common pivot curved-rod 0. The other arm ll of the toggle lever is connected to an arm 01' a bell crank lever Ii by means of a 50 link". The bell c nk lever II is mounted on the pivot 'arm '2 provided with a laterally projecting stud or projection I, at its forward end. Key controlled power actuated devices are provided for 6 actuating the type rod I3 and has a forwardly projecting a cylindrical platen bar. Said devices comprise roller, and at the completion oi a key lever 53. mounted on a common pivot rod 54 and having a key 55 whereby it may be manually operated. The key lever-has a downwardly projecting arm it which has a slot that engages a lateral projection on an arm of a lever 51 5 pivoted on an arm 58 of a bell crank pivoted at 58 in the rrame oi the machine. The arm it extends downwardly from its pivot 58 and has a cam 62 pivoted on its lower end adjacent the surface of a power driven roller ii. The latter rotates in a counterclockwise direction. The lever 51 has a downwardly projecting arm 83 having a stop 64 at its lower end arranged in the path of a lug 85 projecting from the cam. When the key lever is depressed, it swings the lever 51 and moves the stop 64 out of the path oi'the lug 85 when a spring-pressed arm 66 also pivoted on the arm 58 and engaging a projection 88' on the cam swings the cam into engagement with the power driven roller.' When the stop 84 moves out oi the path of the lug 65, it moves into the path of a second lug 61 on the cam and serves to arrest the 'cam after a one-hall revolution, if the key lever be held depressed. when the key lever is released and returned to its normal position under the action of the spring 68, the stop 84 releases the lug 61 and the arm 68 engages a second projection 69 on the cam and turns it into engagement with the driven a complete rotatlon the stop. ilagain engages the lug 85.
The key lever 53 has an upwardly projecting arm ll arranged on the pivot rod 54 and has a laterallyv projecting pin or stud 12 which engages a longitudinally arranged slot II in an 5 interponent ll. The interponent is pivoted on the forward end of an arm I! of the bell crank 18 pivoted at I! and projects upwardly therefrom, and at its upper end has oppositely projecting lingers 16 and 11. -It will be noted that the interponent I4 is substantially T-shaped'in form, and that when the key lever 53 is depressed, it swings rearwardly from its pivot and engages its arm or finger 15 with the stud I on the arm 52, and at the same time the projecting arm 56 of the key lever swings the lever 81 to release the cam 62, which then becomes operative to swing the arm I! downwardly and with it the interponent ll. By reason of the engagement of the arm 1! on the interponent with the stud II on the arm I2, the bell crank, is actuated to swing the type bar into engagement :with the platen. This operation takes place during the first half of the rotation of the earn it. when the key leveris released and returns to its normal position under the action of the spring II, the interponent is swung i'or wardly thereby from engagement with the stud II and into engagement with a stud ti on one arm I2 of a bell crank lever IS, and the cam H is released to complete its revolution and again swings the arm II to actuate the interponent.
.The bell crank 83 is pivoted on a common pivot rod I4 and has a downwardly projecting arm 86 having a lug It projecting into the path of the key lever 53 and limited in its forward movement when engaged with the lever by a lug l'l projecting downwardly from the lever. A link." connects the arm I! of the bell crank with computing mechanism generally designated 06 in the drawing. A spring 95 connects the arm 82 with a ilxed part and resiliently retains said arm in the normal position shown in the drawing and returns it to such position after each actuation by the interponent.
'Ihe computing mechanism is shown diagrammatically in the drawing, since the present invention does not relate to the speciiic construction of the computing mechanism and, as usual in combined typewrlting and computing machines, the computing mechanism comprises totalizing or registering means and amount entering means. The totalizer and its amount entering means may be of the same type and construction as those described in Patent No. 873,314 granted December 10, 1907 to O. C. Kavle wherein the links attached to the numeral keys operate ratchet-and-pawl diiierential mechanism which enters amounts in totalizers seriat-im through a master wheel. The links 8| can also operate some other form of conventional typewriter adding mechanism, !or instance, links 88 could be the links 1| shown in Web] Patent No. 1,270,471. These typewriter adding machines are now well known in the art and exist in several forms in commercial machines. It will be noted that in this embodiment, the totalizer is actuated positively and directly by the power operated devices, and that the spring 95 is operative to return the parts to normalposition. It will also be noted that when the arm 82 is actuated to operate the totalizer, the lug it on the arm ll moves into engagement with the key lever and holds it against a second operation until the spring II has operated to return the bell crank to normal position. By this arrangement, should the parts tail to operate properly for any cause, that fact would immediately be indicated to the operator when an attempt is made to again operate the key. It will also be noted tbatthe type bar for writing numerals is actuated independently oi the totalizer, so that there is no extra load on the power devices when a numeral type bar is actuated, which would cause a slowing up oi said power devices resulting in a faint impression on the work sheet.
Although only one embodiment oi the invention is shown and described herein, it will be understood that this application is intended to cover such changes or modifications as come within the spirit of the invention or scope of the following claims. r
I claim 1. In a bookkeeping machine, the combination of a platen, a type Jar for writing numbers, a oomputingmechanism. Dower driven means ior actuating said type bar and computing mechanism, a key lever, and means actuated by said key lever for operatively connecting said power type bar and totalizer, a key lever, and means controlled by said key lever for operatively connecting said power driven means with the type bar when the key lever is depressed and with the totalizer when the key lever is released.
3. In a bookkeeping machine, the combination of a platen, a type bar for writing numbers, a computing mechanism, power driven means for actuating said type bar and computing mechanism, means movable to iirst operatively connect the power driven means with the type bar and then movable to operatively connect the power driven means with the computing mechanism, and a key lever for controlling both movements of said movable means and the operation of said power driven means.
4. In a bookkeeping machine, the combination of a platen, a type bar for writing numbers, a totalizer, power driven means for actuating said type bar and totalizer, an interponent operatively connected with said power driven means and alternately movable into operative engagement with the type bar or totalizer, and a key lever for moving said interponent and controlling the operation 01' said power driven means. 5. In a bookkeeping machine, the combination of a platen, a type bar for writing numbers,'a totalizer, power driven means for actuating said type bar and totalizer, a bell crank operatively connected with said type'bar, a second bell crank operatively connected with said totalizer, an interponent operatively connected with said power driven means, and a key leverior moving said interponent to and from operative engagement with said bell cranks and controlling the operation of said power driven means.
6. In a -bookkeeping machine, the combination oi a platen, a type bari'or writing numbers, a totalizer, power driven means for actuating said type bar and totalizer, a bell crank operatively connected with said type bar,-a second bell crank operatively connected with said totalizer, an interponent operatively connected with said power driven means, a key lever ior moving said interponent to and from operative engagement with said bell cranks alternately and controlling said power driven means, and means on said second bell crank for locking the key lever against actuation when the totalizer is operated. 7. In a combined typewriting and computing machine. item recording means, computing -mechanism, a power roller, a cam unit operatively engageable with the power roller, means to cause engagement oi, the cam unit with the power roller, and means operated by the camunit for causing the item recording means and computing means to be operated separately in succession.
8. In combination, item recording means, computing means, power driven means for actuating both. the recording means and computing means, means to initiate operation of the power means, means operated by the power driven means and controlled by the initiating means for successively connecting the item recording means and the computing means to the power driven means whereby recording and are en'ected successively.
9. In combination,
a recording element, a computing device,
"a power driven means for computing operations iii actuating both said element and device, a key for initiating the operation of the power means, and means controlled by said key and actuated by said power driven means for operativeiy connecting the recording element and computing device to the power driven means in succession whereby recording and computing operations take place at different times.
10. In combination, recording means, computing means, power operated means for actuat'mg both the recording means and computing means, an actuating device operated by the power operated means and movable to a position to operatively connect the recording means.
to the power operated means and when restored causing the computing means to be connected to the power operated means; and selectively operable means for initiating operation of the power operated means, said initiating means having a connection to the actuating device whereby operation of the initiating means first moves the actuating device to position to connect the recording means to the poweroperated means and then initiates operation of the latter, said initiating means when restored also first restoring the actuating device to the position of connecting the computing means to the power operated means and thereafter initiates a second operation of the latter.
11. In combination a recording element, com-Q puting means, power-operated means for actuating both the recording element and computing means, an interponent connected to the poweroperated means and alternately movable to positions to separately couple therecording element and computing mean: to the power-operated means, and a key for moving the interponent and initiating operation of the power operated means.
12. Incombination, arecording device and a computing device, a pair of sub-levers each connected to one of said devices, a common operating member shiitable to engage said sub-levers alternately, power means to actuate said shittable operating member and the sub-lever with which said member is engaged, and means to shift the operating member and at the same time initiate operation of the power means.
