Abstract
234,770. Rochester Industries, Inc., (Assignees of Kidder, TV. P.). May 28, 1924, [Convention date]. Type-bar machines. - In machines having toggle-actuated sliding type-bars, the platen is so located that the pressure produced during impression by the toggle mechanism is supplemented by impact pressure. Type-bars 23 have the, type-heads 22 arranged to slide on a plate 21 secured to a plate 7 which is secured to frame members 5, 6. The front ends of the type-bars are pivoted to bell-cranks 29 which are pivoted on a curved rod 19 and are connected by links 30A to key-levers 31. The bell-cranks are arranged radially and are guided by radial slots in the plate 7 and a plate 17 secured thereto by means of screws 15, 16 passing through collars. The rod 19 is mounted in the heads of the screws 15. The key-levers converge to the rear and are pivoted on a short rod 32 secured to brackets 33, 34 on a frame member 4. Letter-spacing mechanism. - A universal bail 36 in the path of shoulders 29A on the bell-cranks 29 is secured to a rock-shaft 37 connected by a link 38B to the escapement and ribbon mechanisms. A returning-spring 39 is connected to an arm 38 on the shaft and is normally almost in line with the shaft, the arrangement causing the pull of the spring to increase as the bail is depressed. The spring is effective, on release of the key-levers, to impart a quick return-movement to the bell-cranks and type-bars. Aligning for impression. - The type-bars are guided at the bottom by converging guides 24, 25 and at the top by guides 26 formed on a standard 27 on the guide 25. Carriage-shift mechanism ; shift-key actions.- The shift-frame 45 for the carriage 41 is provided with brackets 49, 50 which are pivoted to arms 47, 47A on a rock-shaft 48 and are formed with collars embracing stationary posts 51, 52. The type-bars 23 are provided with, three types, and the shift frame 45 can be raised for single and double shift by means of shift-keys 47A, 58 respectively. The single-shift key is carried by a prolongation of the arm 47, and the doubleshift key is carried by a lever 59 which is pivoted on a bracket 60A and is adapted to engage the arm 47. The shift frame is provided at the middle with a U-shaped stop member 56 provided with a stop-screw 57D which normally rests on a stop-lug 55A formed on an adjustable stop member 55 on the frame member 4. The stop member 55 is secured and adjusted by screws 53, 54 respectively. When the single-shift key 47A is depressed, the shift frame is arrested by engagement of the bottom of the stop-member 56 with the bottom of a lip 57 on a stop-lever 57A pivoted at 570 to the frame member 4. The stoplever is connected by a link 62 to the key-lever 59, and when the double-shift key is depressed, the lip 57 is moved rearwards, and the shift frame is arrested by engagement of the bottom lug of the stop-member 56 with the stop-lug 55A. Re ference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 2833/91, 7055/92, 16958/95, 28015/03, and 9785/09.
