Type - lever machines; tabulating-mechanism. - In a type-lever machine having a box-base, the type-levers and associated sub - levers are mounted upon a single supporting member to form a detachable unit, the connections between the sub-levers and the key-levers being such that the parts can be readily disconnected by springing them apart, the key-levers being also mounted as a detachable unit. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the key-levers A are of the bell-crank type and are situated wholly in front of the sub-levers F and mounted in a fulcrum-rail B' secured by screws B<2> to the base, the fulcrumrail also carrying column-selecting key-levers, combs C, D, key-lever springs C<1>, and such other keys as may be desired. The sub-levers and key-levers are detachably connected by spring links a, Figs. 1 and 6b, these links being formed by folding over a sheet-metal blank, Fig. 6<a>, having punched-up pivots a<3>, the free ends of which bear against the opposing jaw of the link when folded. The sub-levers are mounted upon a bar G<1> forming part of the segment frame G, which is detachably secured by screws J, K<3>, in guides consisting of a ball K located between grooved members K<1>, tongued plates K<2> keeping the balls in place. A detachable bracket L carries a bell-crank lever L<1>, L<2>, the arm L<2> operating a dog L' which engages a rack L<5>, and the arm L' being detachably connected with decimal tabulator keys by links E<2>. The bracket also carries an arm M effecting carriage release, and may also carry an operating device for backspacing. Specifications 146,637 and 147,287 are referred to. Case-shift mechanism; letter-spacing mechanism.-Rearward of the segment frame G are two parallel rock-shafts O, O<1> carried on pivots o in the base. The shaft O is connected to the bar G<1> of the frame G by arms O<2> and screws G<2>. The shaft O<1> is connected by arms O<3> to a rod P which supports the universal bail Q, and the arms O<2>, O<3> are connected by pivoted links O<4> so that the segment H and bail portion Q move equally under the action of the shaft O, which is operated by a shift key through a link O<5>. The connections are such that the rock-shafts and bail may be detached as a unit, or the segment, bail, and rock-shaft together as a unit.
