Folding type - lever machines; casc - shift mechanism.-The keyboard and the platen carriage are mounted on a support which can fold relatively to a base carrying typelevers. In the machine shown, the framework is constructed in the manner described in Specification 103,508 and comprises a base A and a member B which are pivoted at C, the pivots, however, now being higher and more to the rear. The member B is held in the folded and working positions by the usual-screw c, Fig. 5, engaging holes c', c<2> in the base. The platen-carriage D and the keyboard Pare mounted on the member B, and the type-lever segment c is mounted on the base A; the segment may be secured to a shift-frame F which is pivoted on the pivots C and is operated in the usual manner by shiftkeys f<1>. In the folded position of the part B, the platen' carriage and the keyboard are behind and in front of the type-levers respectively. The printing-keys G are secured to stems g, g', g<2> each carried by parallel levers h, h<1>, the type-levers E being connected by links I to lugs i on the levers h. The pivotal connexions i' between the links I and the lugs i are in alinement with the pivots C of the frame B and the shift-frame F, the arrangement enabling, as described in Specification 109,627, the frame B to be folded and the shift-frame F to be operated without interference of the action. The key-stems g, g<1>, g<2> are offset as shown in Fig. 1, to dispose the keys in three banks, and the lower parts of the stems are arranged side by side and in a single row, the middle stems being slightly bowed to clear the middle links I. The levers h, h<1> are pivoted on wires h<3>, h<4> mounted on the detachable front bar b of the frame B. The wires are seated in longitudinal grooves formed in guide-teeth h<2> for the levers. Letter-spacing mechanism; space-key actions; ink-ribbon mechanism.-A universal bar K, in the path of the lugs : i on the action-levers h, is suspended by arms from the wire h<3>, the middle arm k<1> being connected by a link L to a lever l for operating escapement and ribbon-vibrator mechanisms. The link is arched to clear the segment c when the machine is folded. The space-bar M is secured to arms m<1> pivoted on the wire h<3>, the middle arm being connected by a link m<2>, Fig. 2. to a lever n which is pivoted on the wire h<3>, and is arranged to engage a projection n<1> on the universal bar.
