11,680. Etheridge, H., and Bar-Lock T y p e w r i t e r Co. Aug. 12. Type - lever machines; case - shift mechanism; letter-spacing mechanism. -In machines in which the type-levers are mounted in a shiftable frame or segment, a universal bail, arranged near the pivots of the type-levers and operated by the type levers, is connected to the shift-key in such a manner as to shift with the segment. As shown, the segment A is secured to rods C mounted on levers D operated by the shift key levers E, and the type-levers A' are formed with heels B' for operating the universal bail F mounted in the following manner. The bail is secured to pins F<2> mounted to slide in the segment, and is provided with arms F<3> mounted at the rear on long links G carried by levei-s G<1> having slot connexions G<3> with a cross-bar D<2> on the levers D. The long links G and the pins F<2> cause the bail to move almost horizontally, and, on operating the shift-key, the levers G, and the pins F<2> cause ti,e bad to shift with the segment. The links G are provided with a cross-bar H<1> conneted by a link H to the escapement &c. mechanisms.
