Portable machines; carriage-shift mechanism; letter-spacing and back-spacing mechanism; ink-ribbon mechanism.-In a portable machine embodying the carriage-shift mechanism described in Specification 118,529, and, mounted in the carriage-shift frame, the letter-spacing and backspacing mechanisms described in Specification 121,068 and the ribbonfeed and vibrator mechanisms described in Specification 121,069, detachable snap connections are provided between the parts of the ribbon vibrator and the back-spacing mechanism that are on the shift frame and the corresponding parts that are on the main frame. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the back-spacing mechanism includes a long push-link 112 mounted on the shift frame and connectible by means of a snap pivot 118 with the bell-crank 114 engaged by the back-spacing key 113. The levers 38 of the ribbon-feed mechanism are connected by snap pivots 51 to the links 37 connected to the universal bar mechanism. The left-hand lever 38 is associated with vibrator mechanism shown in Fig. 2, the lower end 48 of the lever being turned over and formed with an opening to engage a snap pivot 49 on one end of a floating link 43, which engages at the other end by means of a pin 52 in a cam-slot 53 in a vibrating plate 54 connected by a light link 55 to the vibrator 56. The pin 52 also serves as a common pivot for the link 43 and a link 44 pivoted on a fixed bracket 46.
